Some of my projects have quite a few forms and modules. I like the tab layout in FireFly but it would be nice if the tab which is currently selected and being worked on could be highlighted with a different color or shade. This would make it easier to spot the currently selected tab.
When there are more tabs than can be displayed on one screen, the arrows at the top right can be used to move the row of tabs back and forth. This is okay but it would be nice to see something like the down arrow on the top right of a FireFox page where clicking the arrow brings up a list of the tabs from which the tab of interest can be quickly selected.
Minor improvements for sure but they would be of interest to me.
My current tab has an orange stripe along the top already. It is thin and therefore maybe easily missed at first glance. But, when you know to look for it, easy to spot.
The FireFly Workspace (press F9 to toggle) has an Explorer tab that fits the bill nicely for your second request.

I'm using FireFly with Vista Home Premium. I don't see anything orange on my tabs. There is only a slight change in appearance when the tab is selected. Takes careful inspection to actually spot that difference on my system.
The explorer is a great option. It is just nice to have alternatives.
FireFly 3 has the drop down list on the right and a slightly different shading for the current active tab. kind of like the way Visual Studio does it.
I doubt that cosmetic changes like these will happen to FireFly 2 at this point in its life cycle. :)
I have been successful in painting active tabs and changing the font to bold.
I have a screen with double rows of nested tabs and this does make it easier to find the active tab. It currently does not do any gradient tints but it might be a place to start if you are interested.
I also paint the background of various sections of screens to create groupings of data.
