Title: Firefly 3.5 installation issue
Post by: Barry Marks on November 07, 2011, 11:28:02 PM
I haven't used Firefly since I got my new laptop and I saw in the PB forum that you have a new version for users of PB10 so I downloaded and installed it.  Everything seemed to go okay, including registration.

I accepted the defaults including storing the files, whatever they are, into the program files folder since I do have administrative privileges.  I gave it the location of PB10, etc.  When I went to save a simple test project it said it couldn't write to whatever folder it needed to save something in.  I'm not sure where that was now.  I think it also suggested re-installing Firefly in some other place.  I'm guessing because I was expecting no problems and I zipped through all this.

So I uninstalled, rebooted for safety's sake, and re-installed Firefly.  Again the installation seemed fine.  This time I told it to install those files in the Documents folder (I think it was documents...whatever was NOT the default).   Then I tried to run Firefly but it won't run.  It gives the following message: "Data folders for the Settings, Projects and Functions library could not be found.  Please reinstall the Firefly application."

I did re-install but I still get the same thing.

Any ideas?

I'm really installing this more out of curiosity at the moment than because I have a need for it so there's no reason to rush with this.

Thanks,
Barry

Uninstall before reinstalling.

Are you maybe installing into a previous FF 3.10 install folder?

Not really sure why you are getting those errors. For the sake of completeness, try installing into a folder like C:\FF35 just to 100% sure that it is not a protected/admin folder problem.

I did uninstall before re-installing.

I didn't have a previous version of Firefly installed since it's a fairly new computer and I haven't used Firefly since I got it.

Anyway I'll try installing to C:\FF35 sometime today.

Thanks,
Barry

I uninstalled, rebootted and then following your suggestion I re-installed in the root in Firefly35.  I had been installing with the default in Program Files(x86).    The same thing happened.  No change at all.

I'm using an Acer Laptop with a Core I7 and 6 gig and Windows 7 64 bit.  Everything is pretty conventional on this system.  I haven't done much customizing at all.  I usually don't.  There isn't a lot of software installed but there are the usual things.  A few graphics programs, some video editing software and a couple of games.  I had all the same stuff installed on my previous laptop which also was Windows 7 64 bit and Firefly installed and ran just fine on it.

Actually it seemed to install pretty nearly correctly the first time on this one.  Everything was fine until it tried to save something.  I don't recall what or what the error was exactly at that point since I quickly decided to just re-install.  It had only been installed about 5 minutes at that point and re-installing seemed the easy fix.

Since then I've run into this with each installation.  It installs without issue and then won't run.  My guess is that there's something that didn't uninstall or maybe some registry entry that didn't get removed.  But that's only a fairly wild guess.  I have no real idea what's going on.

I'm a little confused with this one. Haven't seen it before with any other customer installation. I will have to dig into it further.

I gave up on it.  I've re-installed varying things a bit but I get the same problem every time.

My guess, and it's only that, is that something didn't get set back during the first installation.

I'm not too concerned.  I've never used Firefly much, or any other designer.  The little programming I do is usually in the PB editor and I don't do much of that anymore.  I was just installing it because I was curious about the 3.5 update.  I can't really say I would have used it.

If you think of anything let me know.  If not, there won't be any bad feelings about it.  I'm sure if I really needed it you'd find a way to help get it going.

Hi Barry,

No worries - sorry that it is not working. I am at a loss to understand why not. The code for saving the project/forms is identical between FF 3.1 and FF3.5. If you're able to save in 3.1 but not 3.5 then that is weird.

I am dealing with a user who downloaded the trial version and is having that "Data folders not found" error message. His setup is somewhat different than most (C: drive for programs, D: drive for My Documents). Maybe if we figure out his problem then it will also solve your problem. Maybe, I hope.

Go to the http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals  download procmon ... run it and then reinstall ...

Read the logs ... It will tell you where the failure is.

I tested installing FF3.5 in Win7 64-bit (Barry is running Win7 64-bit) and can confirm the "Data folders for the Settings, Projects and Functions library could not be found.  Please reinstall the Firefly application." error. See attached screen capture.

I then tested installing everything into Program Files (x86) where 32-bit programs are installed. I am able to run and save form. I do not have permission issue.

However, I do understand permissioning issue can be due to how Windows was set up. I used to work in a bank and I could not even write a simple txt file anywhere except in my own user folder. And this was WinXP.

I did not go as far as compiling as I do not have PBWin10.

hmmm... very interesting. I have Win7 64 bit on my gaming computer. I'll install it on that machine and see if I encounter the same problems.

This is broken. I accidentally changed the name of the My Documents folder in the Inno install setup but failed to update the FF source code to test for the new name (it was testing the previous older name).

I will put together a new FF package (including a few other fixes and new MLG custom control files).

Sorry for the trouble on this one. My mistake.

I'm glad you found it.  When you get it fixed I'll give it another shot.

Thanks,
Barry

Quotethe name of the My Documents folder
Sounds hard-coded? Wouldn't that potentially be a pitfall on non-English systems?
I wouldn't know though, as I use English version and don't store much in that folder.

Nope wasn't hard coded in FF. I used a system call to determine the My Documents folder. What is hardcoded is the subfolder that I use off of the My Documents folder. I screwed up by having that subfolder named a little different in the FF source code and the Inno setup. All fixed now. New upload in a few minutes.

I just installed it and tried it with a sample project and it worked just fine.

Thanks,
