I have a project i have been fiddling around with still on Powerbasic.
But from what i can see, time has come to stop the project and move to FB before I put in too much work and then struggle along later.
What I find problematic at the moment is the controls we have in Powerbasic like the XP button of Jose, Firesplitter, Firelines and so forth are not available in the FB version.
I was thinking of completely abandoning 32 bit and jump onto 64bit but from what i can determine is a lot of the .inc files still requires to be adapted for 64 bit.
I have loved the extreme ease of the xprint function for simple printing. Now i am COMPLETELY lost.
I see our company has decided to stick with Win7 64bit for now. But the 32 apps run just as well on it.
So from your all your perspectives, what will the advantages be to go with 64bit, do you think new controls would be forthcoming, can i still stay with 32bit, or in general what is the consensus and feeling regarding this entire issue?
If you are using a lot of FF's custom controls then you should stick with the PB version of FireFly for now. I have not converted any of the Fire* custom controls over to FB yet.
Most of my applications are general purpose business so having them in 32 bit is okay for me. If I needed to write 64 bit DLL's then i would leave PB immediately, otherwise I would not be any great rush. Like you say, 32 bit programs run well on 64 bit systems.
If I were to start a new application then I would certainly not be doing it in PB. I would continue to build tools to FB and add the converted includes and DLLs for any 3rd party DLLs that I'd need.
PB does have some convenient statements built in, like XPRINT. Not sure if there is a dropin type of replacement for it in FB but then again I haven't really had that need yet.
Thanks Paul.
Perhaps i should sit back a bit and give FB a chance to get off the ground properly.
Eventually the gadgets and controls will come as Pb didn't have everything in the beginning either, It came with time.
Once the 2015 exams are over I will be free to take a look again at a nice project.
From what i can see you are already making huge progress and your enthusiasm for FB a definite indication where to follow.
