Toolbar - masked background colors

Is there a way to use graphics with masked background colors in the Toolbar?  

I notice that the background color of the images in the MDI sample app are white yet when the app is run, the white background does not show.  What's the trick to doing this? I am not able to duplicate this in my own toolbar.
